Interview with Michelle Lowe-Holder

- Can you tell us a little bit about yourself as a fashion designer and your brand.

M: I came to London to do the MA at Central St Martins and set up my label after completing. I sell in speciality boutiques worldwide. My collections are not trend based and are personal in feeling. 

- Can you tell us a little bit about the new Spring/Summer 2010, what were your initial concepts?

M: The concept for SS10 is a continuation from AW09 - the summer version of smocking with a dark vs sweet angle!!

- Regarding your A/W 2009-10 collection, can you tell us a little bit about the detail.

M: I have used the craft of smocking a very old technique used in garments since the middle ages print has been designed to work within it.  

- What is the most important facet to pay attention to in your designs?

M: All my designs start with a textile / texture design... and collection builds out from this...

- Do you have any favourite materials/fabrics and/or special techniques you enjoy using?

M: I love hand crafted details and techniques and print of course!!

- In the beginning, what actually made you get into designing?

M: I started collecting vintage clothes when I was 12, I still have some of those pieces and still think they are amazing!! I think that ignited a passion for clothing and design.

- How would you describe your style?

M: Feminine and quirky?? individual...??

- What are your opinions on the current Europe fashion scenes?

M: I love Lanvin and Alber Elbez is fashion god!! I quess when you say Europe I think Lanvin!!

- Where is your favourite place to have relax or dayoff?

M: I am in love with the outdoor lido nearby in east London. It is such a pleasure to swim first thing in the morning, especially in the dead of winter!!

- What are your career plans, do you have any future goals?

M: Stay in business and stay around.

- Do you have some words of wisdom for any young designers and our readers?

M: Absolutely none!!
