Interview with Christine Bec

Christine Bec is a London based designer specializing in the design development production of accessories particularly millinery. The label was started in the early nineties with hats to gradually expand into other accessories notably gloves.

 

- What were your initial concepts for your latest collection?

 

C: I have always been influenced by the clearness of Modern design AW 09 had a strong Bahaus influence.

 

- What is the most important facet to pay attention to in your designs?


C: Quality.

- Do you have any favourite materials/fabrics and/or special techniques you enjoy using?

 

C:  I use all fabrics but particularly like the flexibility of felt.

 

- In the beginning, What actually made you get into hat designing?

 

C: Purely by chance as my degrees are in literature not fashion in spite of some time at St Martins and some experience of Costume.

 

- How would you describe your style?

 

C: Very individual, classical but cutting edge at the same time simple in lines with sparse decorations.

- Would you be able to tell us about your biggest achievements so far in the hat / Fashion industry?

 

C: I suppose to do the hats for the Biba relaunch two years ago was very exciting since I had a work experience with Ossie Clark. My most interesting project however was doing the hats for the performers of Giffords Circus last summer.

 

- Where is your favourite place to have relax or dayoff?

 

C: The sea. Anywhere beautiful in nature.

- What are your career plans, do you have any future goals?

 

C: In the current economic climate I believe that the future of small designers and largely distributed high street relies in common synergy. Ie:affordable but really well thought designs.
