Ben Day

Interview with Ben Day

If you should perchance stray off Londonfs Brick Lane in admiration of the restored 1920fs Huguenot style buildings of Shoreditch, you may come across one of the most exquisite little jewellery stores you will ever have the privilege to encounter.  In it, sits a man, hidden away from the bustle of Bond and Sloane street jewellers, burning the midnight oil in his pursuit to create new masterpieces, each unique and with its own story to embellish you with. Ben Dayfs tempting lavish jewels can send you into the visionary realms of fruity exotic wilderness and beyond. Think jungle. Think of plunging deep into the ocean and finding colour combinations you never knew existed. One could say, that Ben Day is a colour genius.

Ben challenges the traditional norms of Jewellery making and design; he often uses metals such as green or rose gold and blends in stunning rare gems that boast vivid and hot hues. Altogether the result is nothing but a shower of artistic intellect. A strong sense of Dayfs personal values are reflected in the purity of his work, everything is hand-made to perfection, and Ben is known to travel far and wide to source only conflict free, ethical gem stones.  Artisan, Ben Day is a true inspiration to anyone in his field.  UKADAPTA managed to get hold of him to ask him a few questions:

- Can you tell us a little bit about yourself as a jewellery designer/maker and your brand?

B: I have been making jewellery for 28 years now. Whilst I went to college, I am mostly self-taught both in my design, technical and business skills. I buy the gems first, when I have fallen for them, then I will work out how I want to use them. Sometimes this is immediate sometimes it takes months to finalise the ideas. Or I will buy another gem and realise it works perfectly with another I own. I see ideas in my mind and work to put them into reality. I believe real jewellery is timeless, a thing of passion.

- What actually made you get into jewellery designing?

B: I attended a jewellery class with my mum when I was in junior school.

Then years later when I had come to a crunch in my education, I had to make some decisions and from somewhere I said I wanted to make jewellery.

- How would you describe your style?
B: My style is constantly evolving and refining. It is my choice and combinations of materials, gemstones and metals that defines my style.

- What were your initial concepts for your latest collection?

B: I have been working on vivid turquoise blues with deep fiery blacks and gunmetal greys.

- What/who would you say is your strongest source of inspiration?

B: The colours and mixtures of colour I see around me, my wife, she is has an amazing colour sense, family, music, graphics.

- What is the most important facet to pay attention to in your jewellery?

B: Use of colour.

- Do you have any favourite materials and special techniques you enjoy using?

B: I love all the gemstones.

- What are your opinions on the current European jewellery/fashion scenes?

B: I very occasionally see images and ideas that I love. Much of it leaves me cold.

- What are your plans and goals for the near and distant future?

B: Secret.

- Do you have some words of wisdom for any young designers and our readers?

B: You must be truly passionate about your work, if it consumes you then must pursue it.
