Astek

Interview with Astek

One sunny afternoon, I met with graffiti artist Astek, who lives along the Themes River, in North Greenwich. This is the place where in 2000, the Millennium Dome was opened, and has been untouched until the announcement of the 2012 Olympic Games, which will be hosted in London. Since then, North Greenwich has been bustling with activity and development with a remodeled tube station and commercial and residential development. I met with Astek at the station, and went on a 10 minute bus ride to a hidden haven of graffiti.

- When did you start Graffiti painting?

A: 1986

- What did you do before painting?

A: There was a Community Centre in a church where I started painting from my childhood. From then, I moved onto drawing portraits and Fantasy art.

- How do you think Graffiti Art has changed since you started?

A: The quality of art has risen, meaning an improvement of the craft, but we are still considered as vandals by the authorities, with our work painted over. This mentality has not changed.

- Who has had the most influence towards your art?

A: Delta (from Holland) and Snug (from the UK), who is my friend!

- Have you seen Japanese artists?

A: Of course! Ifm a big fan of Suiko. Ifve met him as well.

- What interests you about Japan?

A: Tattoos. Especially wabori (Japanese style tattooing), which is amazing.

- How do you want to carry on working?

A: I would like to continue drawing, but travel more, exhibiting my work all over the world.

- Final word

A: Very pleased to be interviewed. I have a big interest in the technical side of three dimensional graffiti, embraced by Japan. In addition to Japanese tattoo art. Look out for an Astek painting near you!
